Sell a Client Membership
Building a plan, selling it, what members get automatically, and how membership money should be treated.
A membership is a standing arrangement: the client pays regularly and gets something for it. It is the most reliable revenue a shop can have, and the most work to set up correctly.
Build a plan
Memberships in the left navigation. The plan editor has a search box at the top — the form is long.
The essentials:
- Name and description — what the client is buying, in their words.
- Price and billing cadence.
- Stylist restrictions — whether the plan applies to everyone or to specific people.
- Plan discounts — the member price, as a percentage or an amount.
- Service-specific discounts — a different member price per service, where a flat percentage does not fit.
- Commission — how the shop pays staff on membership work, including whether the supply price is deducted.
That last one deserves thought. If a member's cut is discounted, the stylist's commission normally falls with it, and members are often your best clients' visits. Decide whether the shop absorbs the membership discount or the stylist does, and set it deliberately.
Sell one
Add the plan to a ticket and check out, or sell it from the client's record. Clients can also buy from your website, unless you have turned that off:
- Hide Memberships from Website
- Disable Membership Purchase from Website
What members get automatically
Once a client holds a plan, their member pricing applies without anyone remembering to apply it. That is the whole point, and it is why a membership beats a saved discount code.
You can also require a membership to book: Memberships Required to Book (Appointment Settings) restricts booking to holders of specific plans. There is a per-member preference version too — Required Client Membership Plans — so one stylist can be members-only while the rest of the shop is not.
The accounting
Membership money is prepaid, like a gift card. Two settings keep it out of the wrong bucket:
-
Exclude Memberships from Cash Register (Cash Register Settings).
-
Keep Membership Cash in Business (Payment Settings) — under Stylist Keeps Cash, membership cash stays in the drawer rather than going to the stylist.
-
Hide Tips for Memberships (Payment Settings) removes the tip prompt on a membership-only ticket.
Managing members
The memberships area lists plans and the clients on them. A client's record shows their memberships, their status and their history.
When someone cancels, decide what happens to the rest of the paid period. Perceny will not decide it for you, and it is the question that generates the complaint.
Reports
Membership sales appear separately from service revenue, which is what lets you answer the only question that matters: are members worth more than they cost you in discount?
